  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Uplifting Event in Yeshivat Heichal Eliyahu in Sderot

A special event was held for giving the new name to the yeshiva in Sderot -- Heichal Eliyahu – with the participation of Gedolei Torah and roshei yeshivot.

Celebration in Sderot. Sunday, the third night of Chanukah, was a holiday for the entire city of Sderot and the religious community in particular, in honor of the new yeshiva led by Hagaon Rabbi Yissachar Meir shlita.  The yeshiva was given a new name with the participation of Gedolei Torah and roshei yeshivot and named “Heichal Eliyahu” after the distinguished late philanthropist Rabbi Eliyahu Shama z”l.

Already in the early evening residents gathered around the building of the Yeshiva, which was decorated with spectacular signs in honor of the Torah. The talmidim together with rabbis received Maran Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Yissachar Meir shlita with singing and dancing, as he arrived with roshei yeshivot of the south, Yeshivat HaNegev in Netivot and Ner Zerach.

The event opened with Hadlakah Ner Chanukah by Hagaon Rabbi Botbol shlita, Mashgiach of the Yeshiva. Hagaon Rabbi Yisrael Meir Shalom, one of the roshei yeshiva, welcomed the attendees in an opening address.

Next, Hagaon Rabbi Yechiel Kesel shlita, Rosh Kollel in Modi'in Illit, and formerly the Menahel Ruchani of the yeshiva, spoke.

In an excited voice Harav Kesel explained the importance of the day and the event, and told of the fine reputation of the yeshiva since its establishment, as more than a hundred excellent students have joined from the Sephardic community.

Then the Rosh Yeshiva shlita, Harav Meir, was asked to speak. The entire public gathered in honor of the Torah listened attentively for a long time as the Rosh Yeshiva explained the connection between the days of Chanukah that symbolize the miracles of the Jewish nation and its revitalization, and the chain of miracles accompanying the Yeshiva for its existence to this day. In his remarks he also thanked all those who sacrifice daily for the yeshiva and its students, especially Reb Hertzel Shehovi, Deputy Mayor of Sderot, who helped build the yeshiva and continues to help to this day.

The Rosh Yeshiva shlita mentioned the distinguished philanthropist Rabbi Eliyahu Shama z”l, a great friend of the Yeshiva for many years, renowned for his support of many Torah institutions.

Hagaon Rabbi Aryeh Levi shlita, one of the roshei yeshiva of Yeshivat HaNegev in Netivot, explained the idea of publicizing the miracle of Chanukah. Although the mitzvah is an external action the purpose is to affect us internally, and from that point, from the aspect of “one lamp for each person in his home,” one can publicize the miracle. The light represents clarity, and if it is not clear to him how can he make it clear to others?

Hagaon Rabbi Moshe Shirkin shlita, Mashgiach of Yeshivat HaNegev in Netivot, blessed the yeshiva in Sderot that it should grow together with the Rosh Yeshiva shlita to increase Torah and enhance it.

The blessing of maranan v’rabbanan Gedolei Hador shlit’a was brought by Hagaon Rabbi Braverman shlita, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivat Ner Zerach in Zerua. In his letter Maran Rosh Yeshiva Hagaon Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman shlita wrote:

"In honor of Yeshivat Heichal Eliyahu headed by the gaon Rabbi Yissachar Meir shlita: On the occasion of giving a name to the yeshiva I am blessing you that the yeshiva should grow and that great Torah scholars should come out from it.”

Maran Hagaon Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv shlita added his signature to the letter as well.

At the conclusion of the event the students launched into singing and dancing accompanied by a band, and everyone danced for the honor of the yeshiva and the joy of Torah.

The event was dignified with the presence of the entire staff of the yeshiva, shlita: Hagaon Rabbi Aharon Schwartz, Hagaon Rabbi Dov Man, Hagaon Rabbi Yaakov Friedman, Hagon Rabbi Yechezkel Farbstein, Hagaon Rabbi Yehoshua Abikzer, Hagaon Rabbi Shlomo Wachselboim, and Hagaon Rabbi Chananyah Leiner.
