Cleared for Publication: A Large Terror Attack Avoided Inside Israel
Cleared for publication: IDF forces foiled an attack Wednesday night on the Egyptian border. A suspect was discovered as he tried to sneak into Israel carrying with him a backpack. A searched revealed that it held a powerful explosive weighing 15 kg, which apparently was supposed to go to a terrorist on the Israeli side.
IDF reservists operating near Eilat ordered the man to stop, and then proceeded with the army's arrest procedure, which included gunfire. The terrorist tossed the backpack and fled the scene. After performing searches later in the morning they discovered a powerful explosive weighing 15 kilograms in the backpack, which was apparently meant to be used to carry out a terror attack within Israeli territory.
After several hours the charges were detonated in a controlled manner. The IDF is closely following the recent attempts at attacks in Israeli territory. Security forces estimate that terrorist organizations may have tried to carry out an attack similar to the one in Eilat in January 2007 in which three people were killed in a commercial center.
Southern Command Chief Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant praised the soldiers' conduct. The IDF warns that the border between Israel and Egypt unfenced and is used for criminal smuggling. "Terrorist organizations can easily exploit the border for attacks," say the IDF.
