  • Enforcing Freeze Impossible

    According to the Attorney General, Israel does not present have the financial means to enforce the building freeze that was announced yesterday. The budget can only cover 14 inspectors. In a heated cabinet meeting, the responsibility for funding the inspectors was tossed back and forth between the different ministries. Finance Minister Steinitz said to Barak: "I am not your private change purse." The Prime Minister will decide.

    Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is expected to announce today on a building freeze in Yehuda and Shomron – not including East Jerusalem – for a period of ten months, in order to bolster Abu Mazen opposite the Hamas "victory" in the Shalit deal, which is due to be complete in a matter of days. The army is preparing to implement the building freeze.

    The head of the IDF Personnel Directorate, during a hearing of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in the Knesset to discuss the recent acts of insubordination committed by soldiers from the Kfir Brigade, demanded that the Hesder yeshiva heads answer his questions by tomorrow. If not, the ultimatum to end the relationship between the Hesder yeshivot and the army. The head of the Personnel Directorate says that concrete steps must be taken by the yeshiva heads against the "refusniks". Knesset member Ofer Pines, "It is a cancerous growth."

    At a conference in the Western Galilee on Tuesday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned Lebanon of a potential deterioration of the security status on the Northern border. He placed all the responsibility for future clashes with Hezbollah on the Lebanese government. "The Lebanese government is responsible for any clash rather than the Hezbollah, and all of Lebanon's systems will be held accountable," warned Barak.
