  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Jewish Chaplains Will Be Appointed in All Bases of Russian Army

The agreement was made between Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Chief Rabbi of Russia Rabbi Berel Lazar

Yochanan Weisberg 04/08/2009 22:22
During a special meeting between Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar, it was decided that every base of the Russian Army should have a Jewish chaplain who is an authorized rabbi. The chaplains will be funded by the Russian Army and are a part of the program of the 'Russian Military Rabbinate' which was established a few years ago. The aspiration is to arouse more Jewish awareness within the circles of Jewish soldiers who serve in the Russian Army.

The two also agreed on introducing Jewish concepts during faith lessons in public schools, so as to instill just a little bit of Yiddishkeit in the thousands of assimilated Jewish children.

The special lessons, which will be taught to Jewish children only, will be based on a book written by the Russian Chief Rabbinate and published by the Education Ministry.

Sessions in Jewish history will be delivered to all students in public school, with the aim of decreasing anti-Semitism.
This is quite an achievement, as never before have Russian children learned about the glorious Jewish past in their public schools.

Toward the end of their meeting, Rabbi Berel told the Prime Minister about the Jewish military program and how it has had a blessed influence on Jewish soldiers.

Within the framework of the military program, Rabbi Aharon Gorwitz of the Russian Army visited several Jewish inmates in prisons throughout Russia and gave the prisoners much-needed chizuk. He took great interest in their conditions and later met with the generals who are in charge of the prisons in order to discuss improving the prison conditions and rehabilitating the prisoners.
