  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Knesset Member Said Naffaa to be Charged: Contact with a Foreign Agent, and Visiting an Enemy Country

The Attorney General will issue and indictment against the Arab Knesset member Said Naffaa, from the "Balad" party, for meeting with the Deputy Director General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Syria, and for visiting and enemy country after a request to do so was denied. The Knesset member's parliamentary immunity will be temporarily suspended. Naffaa: "This decision is very strange. I will fight it with all the tools I possess."

The Attorney General is expected to issue an indictment against the Arab Knesset member from "Balad", Said Naffaa, for meeting with a foreign agent in an enemy country.

Naffa is accused of traveling to Syria in 2007 without authorization, where he then met with the Deputy Director General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Talal Naji. Naffaa then went on to the offices of the Chairman of the Hamas, Khaled Mashaal. However, no meeting between the two took place, as Mashaal was not in his office at the time.

The indictment will be presented in the Nazareth District Court, and charges Said with traveling to an enemy country, even though he did not receive permission from the Israeli government, due to security concerns. In July, 2007, Naffaa submitted a request to the Minister of Interior, asking for permits for Druze religious leaders  - all citizens of Israel – to travel to Israel. The request was denied, due to security issues. Despite the lack of any official authorization, Naffaa went to Syria in 2007, staying for a week.

"In the aforementioned events, the defendant illegally departed for Syria without a legal permit from the interior minister or the prime minister, and knowingly aided a group of about 280 people to travel to an enemy country without a legal permit," the indictment says.

Regarding the time he spent in Syria, the indictment reads, "The prosecution accuses Naffaa of knowingly contacted a foreign agent without a reasonable explanation for doing so. The accused attempted to secretly arrange a meeting with Khaled Mashaal, and even visited his place of work."

Naffaa's immunity will be revoked, and in response, he said that he found the decision to be "very strange".

"This is a very strange decision. Especially in light of the fact that similar charges against other Knesset members in the past have always been dropped. Whenever Knesset members have traveled to enemy countries, the cases against them were always closed. Only I am being prosecuted. I think it is because the population I represent is a nuisance to certain government officials. Everything I did, in truth, I did as part of the fulfillment of my duties as an MK and representative of the public, and I will fight this decision with all of the tools I possess," Naffaa said.
