  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Gedolei Yisrael Publicize Letter for Chizuk on Chanukah

Gedolei Yisrael shlita sign on a letter calling on Yeshiva students not to weaken their efforts in Torah study during Chanukah.

Avi Greenwald 12/12/2009 21:41
Maranan Gedolei Yisrael shlit’a published another letter Thursday night about Torah study during the days of Chanukah for Yeshivah students. As is known, these are days that need a strengthening in Torah, since most Yeshivot have a vacation for a few days.

This is the contents of the letter: "The Gemara says in Sotah (21), based on the verse, ‘A mitzvah is like a candle, and the Torah is light,’ that just as light always protects, so too, Torah always protects. Therefore, it is worthy that during the days of Chanukah, when the arrogant ones were handed over into the hands of those who delved into the Torah, that we should strengthen ourselves in Torah study and toil in Torah, as it says in Makot (10): Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: What is meant by the verse, ‘Our feet stood in the gates of Jerusalem’ – what caused our feet to stand in war? The gates of Jerusalem—for they were engrossed in Torah study."

The Gedolei Yisrael continue: "It is incumbent upon the Yeshiva students and Kollelim to strengthen themselves even more with organized times of learning during Chanukah, and Heaven forbid that these auspicious days should be days of laxity and distancing from study of our holy Torah, as the Shlo"h wrote – that these days are more worthy for diligence in Torah study than any other days. May the merit of Torah study protect us and deliver us.”

The letter was signed by Maran Rosh Yeshiva Hagaon Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman shlita, Maran Hagaon Rabbi Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz shlita, and Maran Hagaon Rabbi Gershon Edelstein shlita. It should be noted that the letter was recently sent to the Yeshivot so that the talmidim could see it.
