  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Barak Declares: We Will Enforce the Government’s Decisions

Ehud Barak spoke strongly against the protest of the settlers and preventing entry of Civil Administration inspectors into the settlements: "The orders and decisions of government must be enforced and they will be enforced," he said. "The state will enforce its mastery over its citizens to ensure the continuation of negotiations with the Palestinians."

Today (Monday) in the afternoon Barak spoke at a Labor Knesset faction meeting: "The orders and decisions of government must be enforced and they will be enforced," said Barak, "Of course in a way that is attentive to the nuances of the reality on the ground, but they will be enforced and we will make sure that the State will enforce its mastery over its citizens.”

"The freeze was carried out in order to exhaust all means of  renewing the negotiations in order to kick-start an arrangement with the goal of ending the conflict and a reality of two states for two nations – a Palestinian state that lives beside Israel and whose existence ends the occupation and our control over another nation. This goal is still distant, however, and we must pass the path of negotiations.”

Even Opposition Chairwoman Tzipi Livni attacked the freeze and said Monday: "Every time I hear the prime minister tell settlers 'we'll weather this freeze together' and that it is just a temporary move, it means that there is no decision on the matter,” Livni said and added: “Unfortunately, when this government speaks of Gush Etzion and Migron in the same breath it means Israel's interests to keep the blocs intact are compromised."

This was against the backdrop of conflicts that occurred today between settlers and the Israeli Civil Administration inspectors and the security forces in several settlements, when the later came to hand out the freeze construction orders.
As previously reported, security forces said that civilians were throwing stones at Maalei Levonah, but the settlers denied it. According to the settlers, Special Patrol Unit forces are using force and violence against the settlers. The settlers claim they do not use violent techniques, but only block the entrance to the towns.

The conflicts between settlers and security forces ended with complaints from both sides, each accusing the other side of unjustified violence. Now, after Ehud Barak's words, it seems that the Defense Ministry will do anything to "enforce the mastery of the government over its citizens.” If the distribution of orders and the media ferment surrounding the settlements all day long are not considered "enforcing mastery over the citizens" – it’s not clear what we can expect in the coming days.
