  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Breaking News: 4 French Doctors Visited Gilad Shalit

The Arab newspaper "al-Hayat" reported this morning that a French medical team including 4 doctors entered the Gaza Strip last week, and examined the captured Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit. According to the newspaper report, the German mediator acquired a promise from Israel that it would not attack the secret location where Shalit is being held.

The report in "al-Hayat" is based on information provided by Palestinian sources, referred to as "trustworthy". According to the report, the team traveled directly from Cairo to Gaza through the Rafah checkpoint, accompanied by the German mediator. If the story is true, then it is the first time that any outsiders have been permitted to visit Gilad Shalit.

The doctors apparently examined Shalit in the place where he is being held, deep inside of Gaza. The doctors were escorted into Gaza under extremely heavy security, arranged for by Hamas. The sources of the story said, "The entire time, IDF drones hovered in the air above Gaza."

Israel reportedly promised not to attack the secret place where Shalit is being held, and would not attempt to attain his release through a military operation. It is assumed that Shalit is being held in a place rigged with explosives, and the chance that he would survive an Israeli rescue mission is very small. "Al-Hayat" surmises that the visit by the doctors was another step towards building trust between Hamas and Israel in preparation for the final prisoner exchange deal and the release of Shalit.

According to the report in "al-Hayat", the German mediator has recently threatened to end his participation in securing the deal, because of Israel's stubbornness in its refusal to meet the demands of the kidnappers. The German mediator expressed concern that Israel's lack of flexibility would cause the deal to fail.

The Palestinian sources who spoke with the paper, said that completion of the deal is being delayed because of Israel's refusal to release 44 prisoners who are east Jerusalem residents, 20 Israeli Arabs and one prisoner from the Golan Heights, who all began their prison terms before the Oslo Accords were signed. Israel is also in insisting on deporting about 125 prisoners from the Gaza Strip abroad.
