  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Sefer Torah For Sale for Half a Million Dollars

A sefer Torah discovered ten years ago, in the possession of a Morrocan family of Spanish origins, will be sold at an auction.

Yisrael Kehana 12/11/2009 12:30
The Sotheby's Auction House in New York will put up for sale in two weeks time an ancient Sefer Torah that was written over 700 years ago, in the period of the Spanish "Golden Age". It is estimated that the Torah will fetch a price of between three and five hundred thousand dollars.

According to Weiner, "The sefer was in Reisman's possession for 10 years. It originally belonged to a Morrocan family with Spanish origins, who now lives in Israel." Weiner said that people are often totally unaware of the value of what they have in their hands. "But those of us who deal in sifrei Torah, were able to see that the Torah was extremely old. Reisman discerned that it was a very special Torah, and after researching the Torah for several years, including carbon dating, its exact age was determined."

The individual who discovered the Torah is Yitzchak Reisman, a sofer stam and business man who deals in hand written letters and documents. Yitzchak Weiner from Israel, a Judaica dealer who now lives in New York, and who is responsible for making the sale, told "Ha'aretz" that the owners of the Torah had no idea of how valuable it was.

The letters in the sefer Torah are written in a unique manner. The iturim [decorative calligraphy] are rooted in the secrets of the Kabbah," said Weiner, who added that these particular iturim are mentioned in several Jewish works authored during the "Golden Age of Spain".
