  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Kosher Cell Phones Arrive in America: "Meshomrim"

Significant steps are being made towards bringing "Meshomrim" phones to the United States, with Gur and Skver Joining the Movement for technological kashrus.

Yosef Feffer 29/10/2009 11:40

After several years of intensive work, and after several companies went bankrupt, it is finally going to happen: Kosher telephones are almost at the doorsteps of chareidi homes in the United States, and for Skver chassidim, the revolution has already occurred. The holy Admor of Gur, shlita, who just visited the United States, discussed the importance of kosher phones at a large conference of rabbis in Boro Park, and the American Gur chassidim will also be joining the ranks of kosher phone users.

Tuesday, askanim informed the chareidi public that they are working night and day, and have made significant steps towards turning the idea of kosher phones in America into a reality. Numerous times in the past, the public has expressed an interest in the idea, but ma'aseh satan have prevented the idea from being put into practice. Finally, things seem to be moving forward, and good news is just around the corner.

The Skver community has already be instructed by Maran the Admor of Skver, shilta, not to use internet or SMS services, and has been working to find a solution for disconnecting from the forbidden technology. Tuesday, the askanim who are involved in the matter, announced the major progress has been made, and that in the very near future a new kosher phone will be marketed to all the general chareidi public all across the United States. The new product will be blocked against internet and SMS services.

The name chosen for the new kosher telephones in the United States was devised by the askanim and rabbis. The name is "Meshumar", since the phone will protect  (shomer) its users from all sorts of negative influences they can be exposed to while using regular phones.

Another major step made towards completing this great project was a conference held for Admorim and rabbis in Boro Park, that was arranged in conjunction with the arrival of the illustrioius visiter to New York – Maran, the holy Admor of Gur, shlita. The conference was held in the large meeting room of the Gur Mativta. Rabbis who attended the conference included: Maran the holy Admor of Gur, shilta, the holy Gavad of Karlsburg, shlita – one of the greatest poskim in the United States, the holy Admor of Kosov, shlita, the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz, shlita – Av Beis Din of Telz and Rosh Yeshivat Beis Meir, and the gaon Rabbi David Ulbesky, shilta – Rosh Yeshivat Gur, in the United States.

During the conference, the rabbis discussed at length how to stop the spiritual plague spread by the use of non-kosher cell phones. Another topic discussed was the use of the "Blackberry" by many members of the chareidi public, which is not blocked or filtered at all. People choose the "Blackberry" over other technical options, as it is easy to use by anyone who needs to manage his business dealings outside of the office.

Several suggestions regarding how to increase the use of kosher internet servers among the general chareidi public were raised and discussed,  and how to impress upon the public how harmful the use of SMS services can be. The rabbis all supported working to convince more people to use kosher cell phones, so that a larger percentage of the public will use them. For the more people who join the service, the easier it will be to provide high quality service to an increasingly larger population.

The rabbis decided to use all the tools in their possession to battle those who breach fences, and it was also decided to ask heads of chessed organizations and schools to require all their recipients and students to use only kosher phones and internet services. If a parent has in his possession a non-kosher phone, his child will not be accepted to any of the schools participating in this new takana.

An "Etrog" reporter spoke with one of the askanim involved in the project, who said that the system is still in its earliest stages of functioning, but that he believes that many people will soon be supporting and joining the movement to switch over to kosher cell phones.
