  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Pakistan: 90 Killed in Terror Attack

During Hillary Clinton's visit to the country, a huge car bomb exploded in a crowded marketplace in Peshawar. The US Secretary of State said of the militants responsible for the attack, "You are on the losing side of history."

A huge, powerful, highly destructive car bomb exploded this morning in the heart of a crowded marketplace in Peshawar, Pakistan. According to Pakistan's North West Frontier Province's information minister, at least 90 people were killed in the blast, and more than 200 were injured – most of them women and children who were shopping in the market.

The attack took place in the Peepal Mandi section of the city, at an hour when the market was teeming with people. Numerous fires broke out and shops and stalls in the market collapsed as a result of the blast, contributing to the large number of dead and wounded. Eye-witnesses reported that several apartment buildings in the area were also damaged by the explosion, and on the verge of collapsing. One of the buildings did in fact collapse, raising the number of casualties.

Emergency rescue teams that converged at the site were able to take control of the mass-casualty incident by recruiting pedestrians to help provide first aid and evacuate the injured.

Sources at the city's hospital said that 43 bodies had arrived, in addition to dozens of injured people. Many more dead and injured are still trapped in collapsed and burning buildings.

It appears that the militants responsible for the attack wanted to send a clear message to the American Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, who arrived this morning in Pakistan. Clinton said that America will assist the Pakistan government in combating terrorism, but that her country wants to "turn the page" on what has recently been "primarily a security-anti-terrorist agenda". Several hours before the attack, Clinton told reporters, "We recognize that is our imperative to broaden our engagement with Pakistan."

Clinton held a second press conference after the terror attack, and said to reporters: "If the people behind the attacks were so sure of their beliefs let them join the political process, let them come forth to the people and make their case that they don't want girls to go to school, that they want women to be kept back, that they believe they have all the answers…"
"They know they are on the losing side of history but they are determined to take as many lives with them as their movement is finally exposed for the nihilistic, empty effort that it is," Clinton concluded.
