  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

The Day After: Winners and Losers in New York

"Etrog" reporter in the United States brings our readers the election results of the Democratic Primaries for local posts.

Yosef Feffer - New York 16/09/2009 17:12

After a long day of politically motivated efforts to bring the chareidi voters to the polling stations, it became clear that a large percentage of the chareidim from every New York neighborhood participated in the election. In most cases, winning candidates were announced. But a few will need to campaign for a second time around, after failing to receive the required 40% of the votes in order to win.

The results are as follows:

The Democratic candidate for New York City Mayor: As was to be expected, Bill Thomspon took a sweeping 70% of the votes, in his race against two competitors. However, Thompson is still in the first stage of his status as Democratic candidate: he has a long campaign ahead of him if he hopes to oust the present Mayor, Michael Bloomberg.

State Controller: John Liu received 38% of the votes, and David Yassky received 30%. The two will compete in a second round of voting in two weeks time. R' David Weprin, who was also running for the post of public advocate, and received support from the chareidi community, dropped out of the race.

Public Advocate: Bill de Blasio, a former representative of the chareidi neighborhood of Borough Park, received 33% of the votes, while Mark Green took in 31%. They will also have to compete for the post in a second round of voting two weeks from now.

District 33: The district includes Williamsburg, and the winner was Steve Levin – a candidate who was supported by the "United Jewish Organizations". Levin was victorious over all the other candidates, including the chareidi candidate – R' Isaac Abraham, who received only 13% of the votes. Levin was chosen above his competitors by the general population living near Williamsburg, as well as by the chareidi voters. Levin was competing against powerful candidates in those neighborhoods, but in the end beat them all.

District 39: The district includes Borough Park. Brad Lander, with 41% of the votes. His opponents, Josh Skaller and John Heyer received 25% and 22% of the votes, resepectively. Heyer was supported by the Torah institutions and chareidi communities in the city, but still lost the race. "The chareidi community gave its undivided support to Heyer, but failed to get the desired results. Heyer lost because he didn't have the other non-Jewish neighborhoods of District 39 in his pocket. He does not take a stance that is liberal enough for those voters," a Borough Park askan explained to "Etrog". He is still happy, however, to know that a large percentage of the chareidi community members turned out to vote, following the directives of rabbis who indicated which candidates to vote for.

Monsey: This was the greatest victory for the chareidi community and askanim. Christopher St. Lawrence won by 5,833 votes, opposite Bruce Levine from the anti-Jewish "Preserve Ramapo" party line, who received only 3,963 votes. The chareidi askanim who ran for various posts, were elected by large percentages of the voters. R' Yosef Hirch Gross and R' Yitzchak Ulman were among them.

It is important to note that the competition in Monsey isn't over yet. The elections that took place yesterday were only the Primaries, and Bruce Levine will run opposite St. Lawrence in the general elections. However, the chareidi Jewish community made a very strong statement in the Primaries in the face of the anti-Jewish movement that is against the growing chareidi population in Monsey.
