  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

China

China

The following photos introduce us to a culture and world so different than the one we live in.

Contrary to common belief, China is not stuck in the 18th century – the opposite is true. China is a fast developing country and life in the city is far from primitive.
In one of the picture galleries that I will send in soon, you will be able to observe the incredible skyscrapers of Shanghai.  However, in spite of the developed urban cities in the center of the country, the lifestyle in the suburbs and in the far-away cities and villages is totally different.

Many tasks are carried out in old fashioned methods; there are quilt factories that still use the outdated method of compressing the wool with long stone-rolls.
The milking of animals in these remote places is a procedure which is done by hand, as is laundering. In the coming few days, I will try to send in more pictures that will shed some light on other interesting aspects of this fascinating country.

Recycling. The man in the picture is collecting items for recycling. The awareness of the importance of recycling began in China way before the Western world. This man collects everything: from packing material and plastic cups and bottles, to cardboard boxes and much more. In spite of the easy option of transferring the items by turning on the motor, this man will manually pull the motorbike until he reaches a state of exhaustion and fatigue, and only then will he turn the motor on.

In the new neighborhoods in Israel and throughout the Western world, people are accustomed to central gas. In China, however, the gas is distributed in person by a gas distributor – not in a truck but on a motorbike! Notice the cheap, old fashioned helmet – a far cry from the modern helmets we are used to see. צלם

And if we're already dealing with distributions, here is the water distributor. In this picture one can see that the water which is being handed out is mineral water – a real privilege. The Chinese are extremely meticulous about saving energy, so the water is distributed on a regular bicycle. צלם

A picture of somebody's kitchen that I took in…Shanghai. Even in this developed city, there still are poor neighborhoods that are far behind the rest of the civilization. צלם

היהודי הנודד
So we've seen the kitchen, but what do the workers who are not employed in the kitchen do? Well, they are the skewer-sellers. This is an interesting culture which can be found everywhere; you can always see large carts displaying a wide array of foods on skewers in any given place. צלם

This is the Chinese scaffolding. It is made of long and extremely strong canes. צלם

And of course, what is China without a factory? This is a fabric factory which exports its goods to many Western countries, among them Israel. Three of the largest manufacturers in the Israeli market work with this factory. צלם

Now you can get a glimpse of how absurd the situation in this country really is: one the one hand you've got the water distributor, and on the other hand – these colossal buildings. This picture was NOT taken from a plane, but from a skyscraper in Podong', Shanghai, from the 200th floor. צלם
