A Syrian Foreign Ministry official has come out against the bill that seeks to establish that in the case of an Israeli withdrawal from the territories there will be a national referendum. "Israel flagrantly set an additional challenge to the will of the international community in establishing regional peace and implementing the principle of 'land for peace,’" said the source, who refused to identify himself, to the Syrian news agency San"a.
The official added that even if the Knesset approved the law it would be invalid, since it is contrary to international law which prohibits the annexation of occupied territory.
