Knesset Member Hasson: The IDF Cannot Spy on Civilians

Knesset member Yisrael Hasson reacted with anger this evening over the decision to permit surveillance of girls who say they are religious in order to be excused from mandatory army service. "The proposed government bill is fundamentally wrong, for the IDF cannot be put in a position of having to decide who is religious, and determining who observes the laws of kashrus and Shabbos. Aside from that, the IDF should not be spying on civilians with the services of private surveillance companies, if we claim to be a democratic society."
Hasson continued, "I cannot understand why the government does not accept my suggestion that any girl who claims to be religious must prove that she studied for at least two years in a religious institution. That is a much simpler solution, and I intend to submit that idea in a few days time to the Knesset."
