Belgium Prime Minister Elected as First President of European Union

Herman Van Rompuyu, the Prime Minister of Belgium, has been appointed the first "President of Europe", said British Prime Minister Gordon Brown this evening. Catherine Ashton of the United Kingdom will serve as the European Union's first Foreign Minister. The appointments were made by 27 representatives of member nations in the Union, without any say on the part of the people of Europe. (CNN)
