While none of the leaders have rejected the idea, nobody has given Sarkozy a formal go ahead to set up a summit.
President Nicholas Sarkozy of France suggested on Wednesday last week to Prime Minister Netanyahu, and on Friday to Palestinian President Abu Mazen, that France could hold a Peace Summit for the Middle Eastern countries. Ha'aretz reports that on Friday, the same idea was presented to Syrian President Assad. The summit would be attended by: Netanyahu, Abu Mazen, Assad, Jordan's King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman. Representatives of the Quartet of Mideast negotiators - the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia - would also take part.
