CNN reported that Tuesday evening, a large hydroelectric dam shared by Brazil and Paraguay malfunctioned, plunging a large area of central and southern Brazil into total darkness.
An official at Brazil's National Electric System Operator told CNN that the incident at Itaipu caused an outage of 18,000 megawatts – the amount of power needed for the entire state of Sao Paulo and its 20 million residents. Power went out at 7:30 PM, and was slowly being returned during the night.
