Chief Rabbinate and Justice Ministry to Limit Rabbis in Performing Marriages
A special committee with representatives from the Chief Rabbinate, the Ministry of Religion, and the Justice Ministry, issued a ruling today that rabbis of cities, small communities, and neighborhoods may not receive payment for performing wedding ceremonies. In addition, those rabbis must receive written authorization before presiding at the marriage of any couple. No rabbi will be allowed to marry more than two couples in one evening.
However, in the event that the location of a wedding is at least 15 kilometers away from the area under the rabbi's religious jurisdiction, the rabbi will be permitted to ask the couple to cover the costs of his transportation, and in certain instances, payment for the time he spent traveling to and from the wedding.
