Afghans Defy Taliban and Turn Out to Vote
Despite rocket attacks, threats to kill anyone caught voting, and roadblocks set up by Taliban insurgents, the Afghan people have exercised their right to vote. While the turnout has been uneven across the country, people were still arriving at the polling stations at 5:00 in the afternoon, after voting was extended for another hour. NATO and the Afghan security force deployed 300,000 soldiers to guard the polls. (New York Times)
