The first translation of the Bible was the "Targum HaShivim", which literally means 'the translation of the seventy', as it was written by seventy-two Jewish sages in Alexandria, Egypt. It was translated to Greek towards the end of the second century B.C.E at the demand of Talmai the Second, Egypt's ruler.
A miracle occurred while translating it: all seventy two sages translated the Torah in the exact same way, despite having made small necessary changes so as to avoid misunderstandings.
The second attempt to translate the Bible was made during the second century by Onkelos the Convert, who translated the Five Books of Moses to Aramaic. The Targum Onkelos of today has undergone slight changes since it was written in its original form after being edited in Babylon, and was named by the sages "the Babylonian Translation".
Rabbi Sa'adiah Ga'on, who lived between 4442-4502, translated the Bible to Arabic, in order to prove to the local Egyptians that the method of the Kara'im was false and untruthful.
The first attempts to translate the Bible to English were made during the seventh century, and in 1926 the first edition of a true Jewish version of the Bible in English was completed.
The first German translation of the Bible was made by Martin Luther, founder of the Protestant Church, on which he worked for eleven years, between 1523-1534 \ 5283-5284. The Bible was later translated to German inaccurately by Moses Mendelsohn, who headed the Enlightenment Movement, which led to the counter-act of Rabbi Shimshon Refa'el Hirsch, who translated the Torah correctly in order to fight the negative influence that the Enlightenment Movement had on the Jewish communities.
