  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Fallen Soldier Aged Nine and a Half

Nissim Ginni, may he rest in Peace

N. Lieberman 06/08/2009 10:00

The youngest Israeli soldier who has ever fallen in battle was nine and a half years old Nissim Ginni, who fell in the War of Independence as he was patrolling the Jewish Quarter.

During the War of Independence, which broke out in 1948\5708, hundreds of children aged twelve and up were drafted to the home front defense, and were given orders to establish reinforcement centers, transfer messages and assist in local hospitals.

Even smaller children were called to help defend the residents of Jerusalem, among them young Nissim Ginni, son of Yitzchak and Miriam Ginni, who were residents of the Jewish Quarter. Nissim served as signal operator and observer.

On Monday, the 17th of Iyar, 5708, a mere ten days after the Declaration of Independence and the establishment of the State of Israel, which consequently resulted in the outbreak of the war, Nissim was shot by a sniper and passed away on the next day, the 18th of Iyar, which was the day of the surrender of the Jewish Quarter.

His body was found after the Six Day War in a mass grave inside a shelter, and was transferred to the Mount of Olives for burial.

May his memory be blessed.
